The Progress Checks will give you a snapshot of students’ performance at specific points in their learning journey and will help you keep useful records of their progress through the Initial and Extended Codes.

Class spreadsheets for reading and spelling provide an overview of group and individual performance and progress, so you can quickly identify students who need additional support.

Letter names - when and why? Letter names should

Letter names - when and why?

Letter names should be introduced when students securely understand that letters are representations of sounds in words. Teaching letter names at the early stage of phonics instruction is likely to cause confusion and cognitive overload for many students.
Towards the end of the first year of school, letter names become useful. Once the students know how the code works, letter names help students and teachers to talk about spellings. They can say that it is the ‘see’ ‘kay’ spelling of /k/ in the word ‘lick’, for example.

If a student asks how to spell the sound /w/ in ‘when’ before the introduction of letter names, the teacher should show the student by writing the spelling on a small whiteboard. It would be incorrect to say that ‘when’ is spelled /w/ /h/ /e/ /n/ as there are three sounds in the word - not four!

Once letter names have been mastered, both student and teacher will be able to say that it is the ‘see’ ‘kay’ spelling of /k/ in ‘lick’ or the ‘double you’ ‘aitch’ spelling of /w/ in ‘when’ and so on. In effect, letter names then become a useful short-cut!
